Paul Rotha (1907-1984) was a British documentary filmmaker, film critic, and historian. He was a major figure in the British documentary movement of the 1930s and 1940s, and wrote extensively on the history of film. He was also a key figure in the establishment of the British Film Institute, and was the first editor of its journal, Sight and Sound. Rotha’s work was influential in the development of film theory and criticism, and he was a major advocate for the preservation of film as an art form.
