William Steig (1907-2003) was an American cartoonist, illustrator, and writer. He is best known for his children’s books, including “Sylvester and the Magic Pebble” and “Doctor De Soto.” Steig also worked as a cartoonist for The New Yorker for over 70 years, creating over 1,600 cartoons and 117 covers. He received numerous awards for his work, including the Caldecott Medal and the National Cartoonist Society’s Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award.
