Ruth Orkin (September 3, 1921 – January 16, 1985) was an American photographer and filmmaker. She is best known for her iconic photograph “American Girl in Italy,” which captured a young woman walking down a street in Florence surrounded by a group of men. Orkin’s work often focused on capturing everyday life and the human experience. She also worked as a filmmaker, directing documentaries and short films. Orkin passed away in 1985 at the age of 63.
