Rouben Mamoulian was a movie director known for his innovative use of camera techniques and his contributions to the development of the musical genre in film. He was born in Tbilisi, Georgia in 1897 and immigrated to the United States in the 1920s. Mamoulian directed several notable films, including “Applause” (1929), “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” (1931), and “Love Me Tonight” (1932). He also directed stage productions on Broadway and was a pioneer in the use of sound and color in theater. Mamoulian passed away in 1987 at the age of 89.
