Leontine Sagan was an Austrian film director and screenwriter, born on February 13, 1889, in Budapest, Hungary. She is best known for directing the groundbreaking film “Mädchen in Uniform” (1931), which explored themes of same-sex desire and female empowerment. Sagan began her career as a stage actress before transitioning to film directing in the 1920s. She directed several films in Germany and Austria before fleeing to France in 1933 due to the rise of Nazism. Sagan continued to work in the French film industry until her death in 1974.
