Cheryl Dunye is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter known for her work in independent cinema. She was born on May 13, 1966, in Liberia, West Africa, and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dunye is best known for her groundbreaking film “The Watermelon Woman” (1996), which was the first feature film directed by a black lesbian. She has also directed several other films, including “Stranger Inside” (2001) and “The Owls” (2010). Dunye has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including a Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival and a Guggenheim Fellowship. She continues to be an influential figure in the world of independent cinema.
