Charles Burnett is an American film director, writer, and producer known for his work in independent cinema. He was born on April 13, 1944, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and raised in Watts, Los Angeles. Burnett studied film at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he made his first feature film, “Killer of Sheep” (1978), which is now considered a classic of African American cinema. He has since directed several other critically acclaimed films, including “My Brother’s Wedding” (1983), “To Sleep with Anger” (1990), and “The Glass Shield” (1994). Burnett has received numerous awards for his work, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 1988.
