Walter Hampden (1879-1955) was an American actor and theatre manager. He was a leading figure in the American theatre for over 50 years, appearing in over 100 plays and films. He was a founding member of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and was the first American actor to portray Hamlet on Broadway. He was also the first American actor to portray Cyrano de Bergerac on Broadway. He was nominated for two Academy Awards for his performances in The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936) and The Life of Emile Zola (1937). He was also a recipient of the National Medal of Arts.
