Ruby Dee was an American actress, poet, playwright, screenwriter, journalist, and civil rights activist. She was best known for her roles in the films A Raisin in the Sun, Do the Right Thing, and American Gangster. She was a recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in American Gangster. She was also a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors and the National Medal of Arts. She was married to actor Ossie Davis for over 50 years until his death in 2005.
