Critics Consensus

Led by a volcanic performance from Elizabeth Taylor, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a scathing adaptation of the Edward Albee play that serves as a brilliant calling card for debuting director Mike Nichols.

Audience Consensus

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a wild ride of a movie that will leave you feeling like you just got off a rollercoaster. Elizabeth Taylor is a force to be reckoned with as the drunken, foul-mouthed wife of a timid professor. The dialogue is sharp and biting, and the tension between the characters is palpable. It’s no wonder this film is considered a classic of American cinema. Plus, who doesn’t love watching Taylor and Burton go at it for hours?

Storyline

George (Richard Burton) and Martha (Dame Elizabeth Taylor) are a middle-aged married couple, whose charged relationship is defined by vitriolic verbal battles, which underlies what seems like an emotional dependence upon each other. This verbal abuse is fueled by an excessive consumption of alcohol. George being an associate history professor in a New Carthage university where Martha’s father is the President adds an extra dimension to their relationship. Late one Saturday evening after a faculty mixer, Martha invites Nick (George Segal) and Honey (Sandy Dennis), an ambitious young biology professor new to the university and his mousy wife, over for a nightcap. As the evening progresses, Nick and Honey, plied with more alcohol, get caught up in George and Martha’s games of needing to hurt each other and everyone around them. The ultimate abuse comes in the form of talk of George and Martha’s unseen sixteen-year-old son, whose birthday is the following day.

Critics Consensus

A globetrotting caper that prizes its idiosyncratic pieces over the general puzzle, Charade is a delightful romp with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn’s sparkling chemistry at the center of some perfectly orchestrated mayhem.

Audience Consensus

Charade is the perfect movie to watch when you want to feel like you’re solving a mystery without actually having to do any work. Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn are a dynamic duo, and the Parisian backdrop is as charming as ever. Sure, the plot gets a little tangled up, but who cares when you’re having this much fun? It’s like a Hitchcock film, but with more laughs and less stress. So grab some popcorn and settle in for a quick and quippy ride.

Lavish and wistful, The Leopard features epic battles, sumptuous costumes, and a ballroom waltz that competes for most beautiful sequence committed to film.

Audience Consensus

The Leopard is a cinematic masterpiece that will transport you to a world of opulence and grandeur. Burt Lancaster’s performance as the titular character is nothing short of fantastic, and the lavish sets and costumes will leave you in awe. It’s a long film, but every minute is worth it, especially the 45-minute gala scene that will make you feel like you’re right there in the ballroom. If you’re looking for a movie that will make you feel like royalty, The Leopard is the one for you.

Storyline

In the 1860s, a dying aristocracy struggles to maintain itself against a harsh Sicilian landscape. The film traces with a slow and deliberate rhythm the waning of the noble home of Fabrizio Corbero, Prince of Salina (the Leopard) and the corresponding rise to eminence of the enormously wealthy ex-peasant Don Calogero Sedara. The prince himself refuses to take active steps to halt the decline of his personal fortunes or help build a new Sicily, but his nephew Tancredi, Prince of Falconeri, swims with the tide and assures his own position by marrying Don Calogero’s beautiful daughter Angelica. The climatic scene is the sumptuous 40-minute ball in which Tancredi introduces Angelica to society.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a textbook example of a message movie done right — sober-minded and earnest, but never letting its social conscience get in the way of gripping drama.

Audience Consensus

To Kill a Mockingbird” is like a time machine that takes you back to a simpler time, when people wore linen suits and tortoiseshell glasses were all the rage. But don’t let the old-fashioned setting fool you, this movie is still relevant today, especially with all the toxic arguments of contemporary identity politics advocates. Plus, Gregory Peck’s performance is so mesmerizing, you’ll forget you’re watching a movie and feel like you’re right there in Maycomb, Alabama. It’s a classic for a reason, folks.

Critics Consensus

Featuring a trio of classic leading men and a rich story captured by a director at the peak of his craft, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is one of the finest Westerns ever filmed.

Audience Consensus

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is the ultimate Western movie that will make you feel like you’re riding a horse through the Wild West. John Ford’s direction is so good that you’ll feel like you’re right there in the middle of the action. The cast is amazing, and the story is both romantic and political. It’s a classic that will never get old, and it’s definitely worth watching again and again. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the ride!

Storyline

When Senator Ransom Stoddard returns home to Shinbone for the funeral of Tom Doniphon, he recounts to a local newspaper editor the story behind it all. He had come to town many years before, a lawyer by profession. The stage was robbed on its way in by the local ruffian, Liberty Valance, and Stoddard has nothing to his name left save a few law books. He gets a job in the kitchen at the Ericson’s restaurant and there meets his future wife, Hallie. The territory is vying for Statehood and Stoddard is selected as a representative over Valance, who continues terrorizing the town. When he destroys the local newspaper office and attacks the editor, Stoddard calls him out, though the conclusion is not quite as straightforward as legend would have it.

THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE

John Ford regularly made such clear-eyed, unsentimental assessments of the Old West and the lies that forged its mythology that one may wonder how the concept of a “revisionist western” ever took root when the original was already so bleak.

Critics Consensus

Breathless rewrote the rules of cinema — and more than 50 years after its arrival, Jean-Luc Godard’s paradigm-shifting classic remains every bit as vital.

Audience Consensus

Breathless is a film that’s so cool, it’s practically wearing sunglasses indoors. With its hip, jokey tone and stylish flourishes, it’s like a French New Wave take on a classic American gangster movie. The plot may be a bit sketchy, but who cares when you’re having this much fun? Godard’s freewheeling approach to filmmaking is on full display here, and it’s easy to see why this movie was such a game-changer when it first came out. Even 50 years later, Breathless still feels fresh and exciting, and it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of stylish, offbeat cinema.

Michel Poiccard, an irresponsible sociopath and small-time thief, steals a car and impulsively murders the motorcycle policeman who pursues him. Now wanted by the authorities, he renews his relationship with Patricia Franchini, a hip American girl studying journalism at the Sorbonne, whom he had met in Nice a few weeks earlier. Before leaving Paris, he plans to collect a debt from an underworld acquaintance and expects her to accompany him on his planned getaway to Italy. Even with his face in the local papers and media, Poiccard seems oblivious to the dragnet that is slowly closing around him as he recklessly pursues his love of American movies and libidinous interest in the beautiful American.

Actor Tim Robinson stars in this sketch comedy series — which he also co-created — that sees him trying to get people to go away. In each segment, Robinson and his guests do whatever they can to try to drive someone to the point that they need — or desperately want — to leave. Robinson spent several years as a writer on “Saturday Night Live,” so it’s not a surprise that the show’s roster of guest stars includes a number of SNL alumni. Among them are Andy Samberg, Will Forte, Vanessa Bayer and Cecily Strong.

Series Info
This comedy series depicts middle school as it really happened. Comics Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle play versions of themselves as teenage outcasts in the year 2000, during a time when the best day of your life can turn into the worst with the stroke of a gel pen. Adult Maya and Anna — as their younger selves — are surrounded by actual teenagers as they re-experience some of the ups and downs of middle school life. They get a lot of unexpected attention on the first day of school and later face the temptation to do drugs.
Creators: Maya Erskine, Anna Konkle, Sam Zvibleman
