A quiet, moving rumination on loneliness and newfound intimacy, God’s Own Country marks an outstanding directorial debut for Francis Lee.
God’s Own Country is a film that will make you want to move to the countryside, even if it means getting dung-splattered boots. The electrifying feature debut by writer-director Francis Lee is a universal tale about giving yourself over to love, even when you seem hopelessly broken. The performances by Josh O’Connor and Alec Secareanu are aching and real, making their romance feel authentic. This is not just a movie about coming out, but a story about the challenges of living and loving. It’s a beautifully poignant slow burn that will leave you wanting more. Highly recommended!

Better than Finding Dory but not quite reaching the level of Zootopia, the latest Disney animated effort of 2016 adheres pretty much to the formula we’ve come to expect in recent years from the storied studio.

Plot
Moana Waialiki is a sea voyaging enthusiast and the only daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators. When her island’s fishermen can’t catch any fish and the crops fail, she learns that the demigod Maui caused the blight by stealing the heart of the goddess, Te Fiti. The only way to heal the island is to persuade Maui to return Te Fiti’s heart, so Moana sets off on an epic journey across the Pacific. The film is based on stories from Polynesian mythology.

The Work (2017)
RT Audience Score: 86%
Awards & Nominations: NA
The Work takes a gut-wrenching look at lives all too often written off as lost causes, persuasively arguing that growth and change can be waiting where we least expect it.
The Work” is a documentary that will make you feel like you’re watching a group therapy session, but with hardened criminals. It’s like “The Breakfast Club” but with murderers and kidnappers. The film is intense and emotional, and you’ll find yourself rooting for these men to find redemption. It’s a reminder that everyone has a story, and sometimes all it takes is a little vulnerability to change your life. Plus, watching these tough guys cry is surprisingly cathartic.

More than just an advertisement for the process depicted, The Work carries a profound, implicit point about a culture that encourages men to bottle up what they feel, then condemns them after those emotions express themselves in violent, destructive ways.

True, these hardest of the hard men are killers, kidnappers, and gangbangers, but watching them collapsing into shrieking and sobbing piles of fear, shame, and regret humanizes them, startlingly so.
