Honeyland uses life in a remote village to offer an eye-opening perspective on experiences that should resonate even for audiences halfway around the world.
Honeyland is the bee’s knees! This documentary about a Macedonian beekeeper named Hatidze is both visually stunning and emotionally moving. The filmmakers show incredible patience and care in telling Hatidze’s story, just like Hatidze shows in caring for her bees. It’s a cautionary tale about the delicate balance of life and traditions in rural Macedonia, but also a celebration of the joys and hardships of daily life. And let’s not forget the incredible cinematography – I was constantly asking myself “How did they get that shot?” Honeyland is a must-see for anyone who loves nature, culture, and a good story.

Brainy and bloody in equal measure, One Cut of the Dead reanimates the moribund zombie genre with a refreshing blend of formal daring and clever satire.
One Cut of the Dead is like a love letter to all the indie filmmakers out there who are just trying to make their dreams come true. It’s got everything you could want in a zombie movie: gore, humor, and even explosive diarrhea (yes, you read that right). But what really sets it apart is the way it plays with your expectations and keeps you guessing until the very end. It’s a wild ride that’s sure to leave you laughing and cheering for the underdogs. So grab some popcorn and get ready for a movie that’s as inventive as it is entertaining.

First Love (Hatsukoi) (2019)
RT Audience Score: 88%
Awards & Nominations: NA
First Love’s blend of violence, comedy, and romance might seem disparate — but for director Takashi Miike, it’s just another wildly entertaining entry in a filmography full of them.
First Love is a wild ride that will have you laughing, cringing, and maybe even shedding a tear or two. It’s like if Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson had a baby and then let Takashi Miike raise it. The hyper-violence is balanced out by the quirky romance between the two leads, and the jazz-rock score is the perfect accompaniment to the madness on screen. It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’re looking for something different and exciting, give First Love a chance.

I’m No Longer Here’s occasionally uneven narrative is more than offset by its honest and visually poetic approach to themes of identity and assimilation.
I’m No Longer Here is a movie that will make you feel like you’re in a foreign country, even if you’re not. Fernando Frias’ direction is so confident and stylish that you’ll be hypnotized by every shot. And let’s not forget about the music and the lead performance by Juan Daniel Garcia Treviño, which are both outstanding. The only downside is the tentative romance, but who needs love when you have a community to belong to? Overall, this movie is a must-watch for anyone who wants to experience something new and exciting.

Mustang delivers a bracing — and thoroughly timely — message whose power is further bolstered by the efforts of a stellar ensemble cast.
Mustang is like a wild horse that you can’t help but be captivated by. The film’s stunning visuals and emotionally charged story make for a powerful cinematic experience. Director Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s debut feature is a triumph, showcasing her talent for storytelling and her ability to capture the essence of youth. While the film’s message about the dangers of patriarchal societies may be didactic at times, it’s hard not to be swept up in the sheer force of Mustang’s message. Inspiring and fascinating, Marwencol depicts its subject with heartfelt tenderness, raising poignant questions about art and personal tragedy along the way.
Marwencol is a documentary that will make you laugh, cry, and question the very nature of art. It tells the story of Mark Hogancamp, a man who creates an intricate world of dolls and dioramas as a way to cope with the trauma of a brutal attack. Director Jeff Malmberg captures the heart and soul of Hogancamp’s art, and the result is a film that is both hypnotic and unnerving. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be an art critic to appreciate Marwencol. It’s a quirky and fun documentary that will leave you feeling inspired and amazed.

Malmberg hangs back, allowing the character of Hogancamp – rather than any contrivance or “plot” – to power the film.
