Critics Consensus

Perfectly cast, smartly written, and beautifully filmed, The African Queen remains thrilling, funny, and effortlessly absorbing even after more than half a century’s worth of adventure movies borrowing liberally from its creative DNA.

Audience Consensus

The African Queen is a movie that has it all: adventure, romance, and a boatload of laughs. It’s like Indiana Jones meets The Notebook, but with more crocodiles. The chemistry between Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn is electric, and the African setting adds a whole new level of excitement. Plus, who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned boat chase? This movie is a true classic that will have you rooting for the unlikely duo of Charlie and Rosie until the very end.

Storyline

September 1914, news reaches the colony German Eastern Africa that Germany is at war, so Reverend Samuel Sayer became a hostile foreigner. German imperial troops burn down his mission; he is beaten and dies of fever. His well-educated, snobbish sister Rose Sayer buries him and leaves by the only available transport, the dilapidated river steamboat ‘African Queen’ of grumpy Charlie Allnut. As if a long difficult journey without any comfort weren’t bad enough for such odd companions, she is determined to find a way to do their bit for the British war effort (and avenge her brother) and aims high, as God is obviously on their side: construct their own equipment, a torpedo and the converted steamboat, to take out a huge German warship, the Louisa, which is hard to find on the giant lake and first of all to reach, in fact as daunting an expedition as anyone attempted since the late adventurous explorer John Speakes, but she presses till Charlie accepts to steam up the Ulana, about to brave a German fort, raging rapids, very bloodthirsty parasites and the endlessly branching stream which seems to go nowhere but impenetrable swamps… Despite fierce rows and moral antagonism between a bossy devout abstentionist and a free-spirited libertine drunk loner, the two grow closer to each-other as their quest drags on…

Critics Consensus

Adam’s Rib is a cinematic masterpiece that showcases the brilliance of Hollywood’s golden age. With a witty and clever script by Kanin and Gordon, and the direction of George Cukor, this film is a delightful romp through the complexities of gender roles and relationships. The performances of Hepburn and Tracy are unparalleled, and the supporting cast, including the scene-stealing Judy Holliday, add to the film’s charm. While some may argue that the film has lost some of its luster over time, it remains a timeless classic that is sure to entertain and delight audiences for generations to come.

Audience Consensus

Adam’s Rib is the kind of movie that makes you want to grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the ride. With a witty script and fantastic performances from the cast, it’s no wonder this film is considered a classic. Hepburn and Tracy’s chemistry is undeniable, and the courtroom scenes are both hilarious and thought-provoking. Sure, there are some moments that feel a bit dated, but overall, Adam’s Rib is a timeless comedy that’s sure to leave you smiling. Plus, who doesn’t love a good battle of the sexes?

Thanks to an at times sharp script, solid lead performances, and a scene stealing supporting turn by Judy Holliday, Adam’s Rib is an entertaining enough film to warrant a solid review. But one of the great comedies of all time? Not even close.

Critics Consensus

Frank Capra’s Arsenic and Old Lace is a darkly twisted comedy that exposes the hypocrisies and prejudices of the upper-middle class, all while keeping the audience in stitches. The film’s wicked humor and macabre tone are expertly balanced by the sparkling performances of Cary Grant and the rest of the cast. Capra’s expansion of the original play by Joseph Kesselring maintains a steady pace throughout the 118-minute runtime, and the film’s zany, cant-catch-your-breath comedy never quits. Arsenic and Old Lace is a true classic and one of the funniest films ever made, regardless of what anyone, even Cary Grant, may think.

Audience Consensus

Arsenic and Old Lace is a classic dark comedy that will have you laughing until you cry. The film’s wicked humor keeps the macabre tone throughout and the performances by Cary Grant and the rest of the cast are sparkling. Despite some criticism of the film’s pacing, it remains a zany, cant-catch-your-breath comedy that never quits. Whether you’re watching for the first time or rewatching for the umpteenth time, Arsenic and Old Lace is a must-see for any fan of classic cinema.

One of the film’s rewards is that, upon rewatching and rethinking, there’s all that subconscious evidence buried in the story’s basement, and much of the audience’s satisfaction rests in the desire to keep it concealed.
