Critics Consensus

Director Richard Attenborough is typically sympathetic and sure-handed, but it’s Ben Kingsley’s magnetic performance that acts as the linchpin for this sprawling, lengthy biopic.

Audience Consensus

Gandhi” is a movie that will make you want to be a better person, but also make you feel like you’ll never be as good as Gandhi himself. Ben Kingsley’s performance is so good, it’s almost like he’s channeling the spirit of the man himself. The film may simplify some things, but it still manages to convey the importance of nonviolent resistance and mutual tolerance. Plus, it’s a great reminder that they just don’t make movies like this anymore. Overall, “Gandhi” is a must-watch for anyone who wants to be inspired and humbled at the same time.

Storyline

In 1893, Mohandas K. Gandhi is thrown off a South African train for being an Indian and traveling in a first class compartment. Gandhi realizes that the laws are biased against Indians and decides to start a non-violent protest campaign for the rights of all Indians in South Africa. After numerous arrests and the unwanted attention of the world, the government finally relents by recognizing rights for Indians, though not for the native blacks of South Africa. After this victory, Gandhi is invited back to India, where he is now considered something of a national hero. He is urged to take up the fight for India’s independence from the British Empire. Gandhi agrees, and mounts a non-violent non-cooperation campaign of unprecedented scale, coordinating millions of Indians nationwide. There are some setbacks, such as violence against the protesters and Gandhi’s occasional imprisonment. Nevertheless, the campaign generates great attention, and Britain faces intense public pressure. Too weak from World War II to continue enforcing its will in India, Britain finally grants India’s independence. Indians celebrate this victory, but their troubles are far from over. Religious tensions between Hindus and Muslims erupt into nation-wide violence. Gandhi declares a hunger strike, saying he will not eat until the fighting stops. The fighting does stop eventually, but the country is divided. It is decided that the northwest area of India, and eastern part of India (current day Bangladesh), both places where Muslims are in the majority, will become a new country called Pakistan (West and East Pakistan respectively). It is hoped that by encouraging the Muslims to live in a separate country, violence will abate. Gandhi is opposed to the idea, and is even willing to allow Muhammad Ali Jinnah to become the first prime minister of India, but the Partition of India is carried out nevertheless. Gandhi spends his last days trying to bring about peace between both nations. He thereby angers many dissidents on both sides, one of whom finally gets close enough to assassinate him.

The film is triumphantly not a deification, but it is necessarily a simplification, and suffers from some of those disadvantages… But the embattled spirit of respect for human dignity and the need for mutual tolerance flow clearly through the film.

Critics Consensus

The Decline of Western Civilization takes a frank, often funny look at the punk culture of the late ’70s and early ’80s

Audience Consensus

The Decline of Western Civilization is a wild ride through the punk rock scene in Los Angeles during the early 80s. The documentary is as stripped-down and brutal as the music it showcases, but that doesn’t mean it’s not hilarious. From the amusing and pathetic musicians and fans to the harrowing and hilarious images captured by director Penelope Spheeris, this film is a must-see for anyone interested in the punk rock scene. Plus, with no narration or pious experts, it’s pure testimony that will leave you feeling strangely exhilarated. So turn up the volume and get ready for a wild ride!

The Secret of NIMH seeks to resurrect the classical style of American animation and succeeds, telling a mature story with rapturous presentation.

Audience Consensus

The Secret of NIMH is a classic animated film that will transport you to a world of mystery and magic. The artwork is meticulous and the storybook charm will make you feel like a kid again. Sure, there are some depressing subjects, but the happy ending makes it all worth it. Plus, who doesn’t love colorful animal characters? This movie is a sumptuous celebration of the animator’s art and a tribute to the art of storytelling. Walt Disney would be proud!

Storyline

Mrs. Brisby, a widowed mouse, lives in a cinder block with her children on the Fitzgibbon farm. She is preparing to move her family out of the field they live in as plowing time approaches, however her son Timothy has fallen ill, and moving him could prove fatal. Mrs. Brisby visits The Great Owl, a wise creature who advises her to visit a mysterious group of rats who live beneath a rose bush on the farm. Upon visiting the rats, Brisby meets Nicodemus, the wise and mystical leader of the rats, and Justin, a friendly rat who immediately becomes attached to Mrs. Brisby. While there, she learns that her late husband, Mr. Jonathon Brisby, along with the rats, was a part of a series of experiments at a place known only as N.I.M.H. (revealed earlier in the story as the National Institute of Mental Health). The experiments performed on the mice and rats there boosted their intelligence, allowing them to read without being taught and to understand things such as complex mechanics and electricity. The rats and Mr. Brisby escaped from N.I.M.H. and came to live on the Fitzgibbon farm. The rats created a home for themselves under Mrs. Fitzgibbon’s rose bush, creating an elaborate habitation of beautiful chambers, elevators, and Christmas lights. However, the rats are unhappy in their dependence on the humans, who they are stealing electricity from, and have concocted a plan to leave the farm and live independently. Because of her husband’s prior relationship with the rats, they agree to help Mrs. Brisby move her home out of the path of the plow. However, the evil Jenner and his unwilling accomplice Sullivan, who wish to remain beneath the rose bush, yet plot to kill Nicodemus during the move.

Movie Plot & More
Plot

Critics Consensus

It may be too “dark” for some, but Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom remains an ingenious adventure spectacle that showcases one of Hollywood’s finest filmmaking teams in vintage form.

Audience Consensus

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is a wild ride that will have you on the edge of your seat. While some critics may argue that the plot is incoherent and the film is mean-spirited, it’s hard to deny the sheer entertainment value of this movie. Harrison Ford brings his A-game as the resourceful and swaggering Indiana Jones, and the action is nonstop. Sure, there may be some tonal miscues and a clumsy love story, but who cares when you’re watching Indy battle it out with a cult of evil priests and dodging booby traps left and right? This film may not be as classic as Raiders or the Last Crusade, but it’s still a must-watch for any action-adventure fan.

Critics Consensus

Graduation marks yet another well-written and powerfully acted look at morality and societal decay from writer-director Cristian Mungiu.

Audience Consensus

Graduation” is a movie that will make you feel like you’re watching paint dry, but in a good way. The slow burn of the story and the naturalistic performances will have you invested in the characters before you even realize it. And just when you think nothing is happening, everything is happening. It’s a morally ambiguous tale of corruption and complex decisions that will leave you with more questions than answers, but isn’t that what life is all about? Plus, the cinematography is pretty darn good.

Packed with action and populated by both familiar faces and fresh blood, The Force Awakens successfully recalls the series’ former glory while injecting it with renewed energy.

Audience Consensus

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is like a warm hug from an old friend, but with a fresh new outfit. It’s got all the classic elements we love, but with some exciting new twists and turns. And let’s not forget about BB-8, the cutest droid in the galaxy. J.J. Abrams did the impossible and brought Star Wars back to life, and I couldn’t help but cry, laugh, and smile all at once. May the force be with you, always.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS
  All Critics (448) | Top Critics (87) | Fresh (415) | Rotten (33)
It’s both nostalgic and fresh, a tender homage to, especially, the initial Star Wars (“Episode IV: A New Hope”), as well as a bridge to help those of us stuck in the splendor of Hoth edge into the future.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens gives new life to a franchise of hope, resilience, courage and family that’s been missing from theatres for far too long.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens honors the series and takes it in exciting new directions. Both The Millennium Falcon and millennials, it would seem, are in good hands.

‘The Force Awakens’ does what the original films did well – and is also its own, thrilling thing.

Despite the copious servings of tragic threats and good feelings, the production sinks under the weight of its emotional calculation.

It all comes together nicely as the actors breathe vulnerability, fallibility and personality into their roles, with Daisy Ridley being quite the commanding presence. My favourite, hands down, is the cute and rotund droid BB-8.

I cried, I laughed, and as the film concluded I couldnt help but smile knowing that J.J. had done what many were terrified he couldnt do, he brought Star Wars back to life.

The Force Awakens loves the original trilogy so much its sometimes a little afraid to leave its side, but for what it needed, and continues, to accomplish, it’s a hard movie to really poke holes in, even if they’re evidently there.

Episode VII will serve as an excellent letter of introduction so that the new generations who have not watched Star Wars are interested in the saga and approach the previous episodes with a new vision [Full review in Spanish]
