Critics Consensus

Led by an outstanding performance from Cliff Curtis, The Dark Horse tackles complex themes with a richly layered, unpredictable, and deeply affecting story

Audience Consensus

If you’re looking for a movie that will make you feel good and inspired, but also has some grit and heart, then The Dark Horse is the perfect pick. With a standout performance from Cliff Curtis as the unconventional mentor, Gen, this film takes the formula of underprivileged kids challenging the elites and turns it into something special. Sure, it might get a little corny at times, but the storytelling and performances are so powerful that you won’t even care. Plus, who doesn’t love a good chess lesson that doubles as a life strategy? Overall, The Dark Horse is a rough beauty of a picture that will leave you feeling uplifted and moved.

Critics Consensus

Jafar Panahi’s Taxi is a cinematic masterpiece that showcases the director’s ability to create a thought-provoking and entertaining film despite the limitations imposed upon him. The film’s use of a taxi as the sole spatial reference is a stroke of genius, allowing Panahi to weave together a complex narrative that reflects the social and political realities of contemporary Iran. The film is a testament to Panahi’s resilience and creativity, and his ability to turn his punishment into a work of art that is both poignant and humorous. With Taxi Tehran, Panahi cements his place as one of the most important filmmakers of our time, and a true master of his craft.

Audience Consensus

Jafar Panahi’s Taxi is like a wild ride through the streets of Tehran, with unexpected twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. Panahi’s clever use of a taxi as the setting for his film allows him to explore the complexities of Iranian society in a way that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. From the hilarious conversations with his passengers to the poignant moments of reflection, this film is a must-see for anyone who loves cinema that challenges and inspires. Panahi proves once again that he is a master of his craft, and his resilience in the face of adversity is truly inspiring.

Critics Consensus

Frederick Wiseman’s In Jackson Heights is a cinematic masterpiece that captures the essence of a community in its last days. The film is a testament to the power of grassroots democracy, self-government, and mutual respect, and it lays bare the inner workings of civilization itself. Wiseman’s meticulous and even impersonal approach to capturing the rich mix of cultures in Jackson Heights is a reminder of the importance of community and the intricate maintenance required to sustain it. The film is both impossibly nostalgic and hopeful, offering a glimpse into a world that is slowly disappearing. In Jackson Heights is a must-see for anyone who wants to understand the complexities of modern society and the importance of preserving our communities.

Audience Consensus

In Jackson Heights is like a three-hour tour of a small town, but instead of a tropical island, it’s a melting pot of cultures in New York City. You’ll meet a cast of characters that will make you laugh, cry, and maybe even scratch your head in confusion. But that’s the beauty of it all. You’ll feel like you’re a part of the community, and you’ll leave with a newfound appreciation for the intricate maintenance of our diverse neighborhoods. Plus, you’ll get to witness some grassroots democracy in action, and who doesn’t love a good dose of mutual respect? So grab some popcorn, settle in, and get ready for a ride that’s both nostalgic and hopeful.

Critics Consensus

Grimly intense yet thoroughly rewarding, Son of Saul offers an unforgettable viewing experience — and establishes director László Nemes as a talent to watch

Audience Consensus

Son of Saul is a movie that will leave you feeling like you’ve been through the wringer, but in the best way possible. It’s not your typical Holocaust drama – it’s a masterful work of art that will take you right to the gates of hell and back. The film’s formalist experiment yields stunning emotional dividends, making this unfathomable act personal in a way that’s both harrowing and cathartic. And while it’s not exactly a fun watch, it’s a necessary one that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

Audience Consensus

The End of the Tour” is a movie that will make you feel like you’re having a deep conversation with a friend, but without the awkward silences and weird pauses. Segel’s portrayal of Wallace is spot-on, and you’ll find yourself getting lost in the literary world of these two writers. It’s like a buddy movie, but for intellectuals. Plus, who doesn’t love a good road trip movie? Just don’t watch it if you’re feeling too existential, or you might end up questioning the meaning of life.

I can’t speak to its veracity, but I loved Segel’s work here, playing Wallace as someone who over-analyzed everything, to a compulsive, near paralyzing degree, while still managing to be the most interesting, literary guy in the room.

The performances, the writing, the direction, Segel’s D.F.W. impression, everything is just fine. But The End of the Tour is disgraceful. It feels like it’s towing out the real Wallace’s ghost to perform some soppy parody of himself.

Critics Consensus

Tense, complex, and drenched in atmosphere, Phoenix is a well-acted, smartly crafted war drama that finds writer-director Christian Petzold working at peak power

Audience Consensus

Phoenix is like a game of cinematic Jenga, where every piece is perfectly placed to create a haunting and suspenseful story. Christian Petzold’s direction and Nina Hoss’s performance are a match made in post-war Berlin heaven. It’s a film that will leave you questioning identity, love, and the power of memory. Just don’t try to play Jenga while watching it, you might knock over the tower of emotions.

Critics Consensus

Simultaneously broad and progressive, Spy offers further proof that Melissa McCarthy and writer-director Paul Feig bring out the best in one another — and delivers scores of belly laughs along the way

Audience Consensus

Spy is the perfect movie for anyone who loves a good laugh and a bit of action. Melissa McCarthy shines as always, proving that she’s a comedic genius. The movie is a hilarious spoof of the spy genre, with plenty of big, obvious gags that somehow still manage to succeed. And let’s not forget about the foot chases – watching McCarthy keep pace with actors who spend their lives in the gym is pure comedy gold. Overall, Spy is a must-watch for anyone who wants to have a good time and forget about their troubles for a while.
