Plot
Over 65 million people around the world have been forced from their homes to escape famine, climate change and war in the greatest human displacement since World War II. Human Flow, an epic film journey led by the internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei, gives a powerful visual expression to this massive human migration. The documentary elucidates both the staggering scale of the refugee crisis and its profoundly personal human impact. Captured over the course of an eventful year in 23 countries, the film follows a chain of urgent human stories that stretches across the globe in countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, France, Greece, Germany, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, and Turkey. Human Flow is a witness to its subjects and their desperate search for safety, shelter and justice: from teeming refugee camps to perilous ocean crossings to barbed-wire borders; from dislocation and disillusionment to courage, endurance and adaptation; from the haunting lure of lives left behind to the unknown potential of the future. Human Flow comes at a crucial time when tolerance, compassion and trust are needed more than ever. This visceral work of cinema is a testament to the unassailable human spirit and poses one of the questions that will define this century: Will our global society emerge from fear, isolation, and self-interest and choose a path of openness, freedom, and respect for humanity?

A visual treat filled out by consistently stellar work from Robert Pattinson, Good Time is a singularly distinctive crime drama offering far more than the usual genre thrills
Good Time” is like a rollercoaster ride that you can’t get off of, but in a good way. Robert Pattinson’s performance is so convincing that you forget he was ever Edward Cullen. The Safdie brothers’ direction is chaotic and thrilling, making you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. It’s a crime thriller that’s not afraid to show the moral ambiguity of its characters, and it’s all set against the backdrop of a distinctly New York flavor. It’s a wild ride that you won’t forget anytime soon.

Surrounded by the immense and furious ocean, a shipwrecked mariner battles for his life with the relentless towering waves. On the brink of demise, eventually, the man will find himself washed ashore on a deserted tropical island of sandy beaches, timid animal inhabitants, and a gracefully swaying bamboo forest. Alone, famished, yet determined to break free from this Eden-like prison, the stranded sailor summons up the strength to build a small raft, and sets off on a perilous journey in the wide open sea; however, an indistinguishable adversary prevents him from escaping. Never giving up hope, each day, the exhausted man attempts to make a new, sturdier, and more improved raft; nevertheless, the sea is vast with wonderful and mysterious creatures, and the island’s only red turtle won’t let the weary survivor escape that easily. Could this be the heartless enemy?

Manchester by the Sea delivers affecting drama populated by full-bodied characters, marking another strong step forward for writer-director Kenneth Lonergan
Manchester by the Sea is a movie that will make you feel all the feels. It’s a story about grief, guilt, and family that will leave you feeling empty, but in a good way. The performances are outstanding, especially Casey Affleck’s, who plays a mournful loner drawn back into his old fold. Sure, there are some weak characters and moments of confusion, but who cares when you get to see the bricks of the Rebellion being laid? Plus, that ending! It’s a film that connects Episodes III and IV in ways we could have never imagined, and it’s one of the highest chapters of the entire saga. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy this heroic 2-hour requiem. May the force be with you!

As comfortingly workmanlike as its protagonist, Sully makes solid use of typically superlative work from its star and director to deliver a quietly stirring tribute to an everyday hero
Sully is the kind of movie that makes you want to stand up and applaud, even if you’re just sitting on your couch. Tom Hanks is the perfect choice to play the hero pilot, and Clint Eastwood’s direction is as steady as the plane landing on the Hudson. Sure, it’s a bit mushy and predictable, but sometimes you just need a feel-good story about a guy who did his job and saved lives. Plus, it’s always fun to see a white-haired Tom Hanks in action.

Led by a powerful performance from Sônia Braga, Aquarius uses a conflict between a tenant and developers to take an insightful look at the relationship between space and identity
Aquarius is a film that will make you want to move to Brazil just to live in Sonia Braga’s gorgeous apartment by the sea. The movie is a clever political allegory that also manages to be a leisurely character study, thanks to Braga’s awe-inspiring performance. The intrusions into her life are filmed like a thriller, which only adds to the simmering tension that explodes in the powerful third act. Overall, Aquarius is a dense and richly textured film that is definitely worth a watch.

This clever, nuanced drama doubles as a political allegory concerning Brazilian corruption. But it would matter, regardless. A dawning, as the similarly-titled song has it.

One Room With A View…
Plot
Los Angeles, 1967. Welcome to the Summer of Love. Aquarius stars David Duchovny as Sam Hodiak, a seasoned homicide detective whose investigations dovetail with the activities of real life cult leader Charles Manson in the years before he masterminded the most notorious killings of a generation, the Tate-LaBianca murders. A small time but charismatic leader with big plans, Manson has begun to build up his “family”, recruiting vulnerable young men and women to join his cause. Teaming up with a young cop who will help him infiltrate Manson’s circle, Hodiak is forced to see things through the questioning eyes of someone who came of age amongst the current anti-establishment counterculture. Edgy, addictive and visually stunning, the Age of Aquarius is here.

As much as April and the Extraordinary World veers around a little too often and gets too self-indulgent with its exposition, the film effectively builds a whole other steampunk-inspired world in which viewers can get lost, gas masks and all.
