10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
RT Audience Score: 79%
Awards & Nominations: 16 wins & 48 nominations
Smart, solidly crafted, and palpably tense, 10 Cloverfield Lane makes the most of its confined setting and outstanding cast — and suggests a new frontier for franchise filmmaking
10 Cloverfield Lane is a must-see thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. John Goodman’s performance as the affable yet menacing Howard is a standout, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead matches him note for note. The twists and turns will keep you guessing until the very end, and the sounds will make you squirm as much as the visuals. It’s a refreshing take on a familiar concept, and a spellbinding treat that you won’t want to end.

Howard offers her a pair of crutches to help her remain mobile with her leg injury sustained from the car crash and tells her to “get good on those” before leaving the bunker. She has been given the information that there has been an alien attack and the outside world is poisoned. However, Howard and Emmett’s intentions soon become questionable and Michelle is faced with a question: Is it better in here or out there?

RT Audience Score: 75%
Awards & Nominations: 23 wins & 8 nominations
Smart, visually arresting, and scathingly funny, Aferim! depicts a world that many American filmgoers have never seen — but will still, in many respects, find utterly familiar
Aferim! is a hilarious and eye-opening film that takes a look at the enslavement of the Roma people in 19th-century Romania. Shot in black and white, the film feels like an ancient newsreel, but with a modern twist. The witty and sharp humor cuts like a knife, making it a perfect reflection of the film’s title – Attaboy! The characters are eccentric and absurd, but ultimately the film is a brutal portrait of late-Feudal Europe. It’s a must-watch for anyone who loves a good historical comedy with a touch of misanthropy.

Plot
Around the world everyone knows that honest hard work gets you nowhere. In sunny Orlando, Florida, construction worker Dennis Nash learns this the hard way when he is evicted from his home by a charismatic, gun-toting real-estate broker, Rick Carver. Humiliated and homeless, Nash has no choice but to move his mom and nine-year old son into a shabby, dangerous motel. All is lost. Until an unexpected opportunity arises for Nash to strike a deal with the devil – he begins working for Carver in a desperate attempt to get his home back. Carver seduces Nash into a risky world of scamming and stealing from the banks and the government; he teaches Nash how the rich get richer. Living a double life, Nash hides his new boss and job from his family. He rises fast and makes real money; he dreams bigger. But there is a cost. On Carver’s orders, Nash must evict honest families from their homes – just as it happened to him. Nash’s conscience starts tearing him apart… but his son needs a home. In a dramatic high stakes climax, with a 1,000 home deal on the line, Nash will have to choose between destroying an honest man for the ultimate win or risking it all by going against Carver and finding redemption.

Led by an outstanding performance from Jacir Eid Al-Hwietat in the title role, Theeb is a startlingly assured first effort from director/co-writer Naji Abu Nowar
Theeb is like a Middle Eastern version of a classic western, complete with a young hero coming of age and facing danger in the wild desert. But instead of cowboys and Indians, we have Arab bedouins and colonialism. The stunning setting of Wadi Rum is like a character in itself, and the nonprofessional cast delivers convincing performances, especially Jacir Eid as the titular character. Director Naji Abu Nowar’s debut feature is a refreshing take on the genre, and a powerful metaphor for self-determination in the Middle East.

Plot
In 1962 Hitchcock and Truffaut locked themselves away in Hollywood for a week to excavate the secrets behind the mise-en-scène in cinema. Based on the original recordings of this meeting-used to produce the mythical book Hitchcock/Truffaut-this film illustrates the greatest cinema lesson of all time and plummets us into the world of the creator of Psycho, The Birds, and Vertigo. Hitchcock’s incredibly modern art is elucidated and explained by today’s leading filmmakers: Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Arnaud Desplechin, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Wes Anderson, James Gray, Olivier Assayas, Richard Linklater, Peter Bogdanovich and Paul Schrader.

Tangerine shatters casting conventions and its filmmaking techniques are up-to-the-minute, but it’s an old-fashioned comedy at heart — and a pretty wonderful one at that

The performances from Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez are electric, and the fact that the movie was shot entirely on iPhones just adds to its gritty charm. Led by a charming performance from Paul Rudd, Ant-Man offers Marvel thrills on an appropriately smaller scale — albeit not as smoothly as its most successful predecessors
Ant-Man may not be the most popular superhero in the Marvel universe, but this movie is definitely worth a watch. It’s got everything you could want in a summer blockbuster: action, humor, and a tiny hero who can ride on the back of an ant. Sure, the romantic storyline is a bit absurd, but who cares when you’re laughing so hard you can barely breathe? And let’s be real, any movie that can make ants seem cool is doing something right. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the ride with Ant-Man.

Ant-Man has its charms, but they’re frequently lost beneath a story that feels like a patchwork job. It’s a fun watch, but also a frustrating one.

RT Audience Score:
Awards & Nominations: 4 wins & 4 nominations
The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz is a poignant and thought-provoking documentary that delves into the life and untimely death of a digital-age revolutionary. Through interviews with family, friends, and colleagues, director Brian Knappenberger paints a vivid portrait of a brilliant and complex young man who was driven by a desire to make the world a better place. The film is both a celebration of Swartz’s life and a scathing indictment of the government’s overzealous prosecution of him. With its mix of heart-wrenching personal stories and incisive political commentary, The Internet’s Own Boy is a must-see for anyone interested in the intersection of technology, activism, and justice.
The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz is a documentary that will make you feel all the feels. From sadness to outrage, this film tells the story of a brilliant young man who fought for what he believed in and paid the ultimate price. It’s a chilling reminder of the power of the government and the importance of standing up for what’s right. But don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom – there are plenty of eggheads and printout sheets to keep things interesting. Overall, a must-watch for anyone who cares about the future of the internet and the people who fight to keep it free.

Plot
The story of programming prodigy and information activist Aaron Swartz. From Swartz’s help in the development of the basic internet protocol RSS to his co-founding of Reddit, his fingerprints are all over the internet. But it was Swartz’s groundbreaking work in social justice and political organizing combined with his aggressive approach to information access that ensnared him in a two year legal nightmare. It was a battle that ended with the taking of his own life at the age of 26. Aaron’s story touched a nerve with people far beyond the online communities in which he was a celebrity. This film is a personal story about what we lose when we are tone deaf about technology and its relationship to our civil liberties.
