Led by a mesmerizing debut performance from Elizabeth Olsen, Martha Marcy May Marlene is a distinctive, haunting psychological drama
Martha Marcy May Marlene is a film that will leave you feeling like you need a hug and a stiff drink. With a cast of exceptional actors, including Elizabeth Olsen and John Hawkes, this movie takes you on a journey through the mind of a young woman who has escaped a cult. The flashbacks are haunting, and the tension builds until the very end. It’s not a movie for everyone, but if you’re in the mood for a psychological thriller that will make you question everything, then this is the film for you. Just make sure you have that drink ready when the credits roll.

Plot
An unlikely kind of friendship develops between Fergus (Stephen Rea), an Irish Republican Army volunteer, and Jody (Forest Whitaker), a kidnapped British soldier lured into an IRA trap by Jude (Miranda Richardson), another IRA member. When the hostage-taking ends up going horribly wrong, Fergus escapes and heads to London, where he seeks out Jody’s lover, a hairdresser named Dil (Jaye Davidson). Fergus adopts the name “Jimmy” and gets a job as a day laborer. He also starts seeing Dil, who knows nothing about Fergus’ IRA background. But there is something about Dil that Fergus doesn’t know, either.

The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
RT Audience Score: 86%
Awards & Nominations: 2 wins & 1 nomination
It may not be the finest version of Charles Dickens’ tale to grace the screen, but The Muppet Christmas Carol is funny and heartwarming, and serves as a good introduction to the story for young viewers
The Muppet Christmas Carol is the perfect holiday movie to watch with your family. Michael Caine is a delight as Scrooge, and the Muppets add their own brand of humor to the classic story. Plus, who doesn’t love seeing Statler and Waldorf as the Marley brothers? The songs may be a bit cheesy, but they’re still catchy enough to sing along to. And let’s not forget about Kermit’s nephew Robin stealing the show as Tiny Tim. Overall, this movie is a must-watch every Christmas season.

Dead Again (1991)
RT Audience Score: 76%
Awards & Nominations: Nominated for 1 BAFTA Award
1 win & 5 nominations total
Dead Again is a film that is both a mystery movie and a movie-movie, with a sheer “movieness” that gives the picture its kick. Branagh’s direction is highly organized, displaying his desire to not just passively assemble a movie, but to rattle the senses as well. While the mixture of gritty noir and supernatural shenanigans may sit uneasily, the film is engaging in spite of its cheesy ending. Be grateful for the genuine amusement Dead Again supplies, as it may be cotton candy, but it’s well spun. As a highly intelligent, sesquipedalian, and verbose critic, I must say that this film is a fun and enjoyable ride that will keep you guessing until the very end.
Dead Again is a movie that’s so fun, it’s like a rollercoaster ride. Sure, it may not be the most logical or believable film out there, but who cares when you’re having this much fun? Kenneth Branagh’s direction is top-notch, and the way he intercuts between past and present is nothing short of genius. Plus, the supernatural elements add just the right amount of spice to the noir-ish plot. And let’s not forget about the performances – Branagh and Emma Thompson have amazing chemistry, and the supporting cast is equally great. So if you’re looking for a movie that’s equal parts mystery, melodrama, and pure entertainment, Dead Again is the way to go.

Slacker (1991)
RT Audience Score: 77%
Awards & Nominations: 1 win & 3 nominations
Slacker, a film that defies traditional plot structure, is a fascinating exploration of the eccentricities of daily life in Austin, Texas. Linklater’s keen observations of the city’s denizens, from the Dostoevsky wanna-be to the breakthrough day seeker, are both hilarious and poignant. The film’s fly-on-the-wall style, which was actually meticulously planned, captures the energy and creativity of a generation searching for meaning in a world that often seems to lack it. Slacker is a time capsule of a bygone era, and a must-see for anyone interested in the early days of independent cinema.
Slacker is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get. With a cast of characters that are as diverse as they are quirky, this film takes you on a wild ride through the streets of Austin, Texas. While there may not be a traditional plot, the smart observations and witty dialogue make up for it. It’s like watching a bunch of strangers’ lives intersect and it’s oddly compelling. Plus, it’s a time capsule of the independent film movement that’s both fascinating and hilarious. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.
