He was a major figure in the British documentary film movement of the 1930s and 1940s, and was a founding member of the British Film Institute. He was also a key figure in the development of the Free Cinema movement, which sought to bring documentary films to a wider audience. Montagu was a committed Marxist and a lifelong advocate of progressive causes. He wrote extensively on film and politics, and was a major influence on the development of film theory.
