Critics Consensus

Steadily drawing viewers into its harrowing tale with equal parts grim intensity and startling compassion, Night Comes On heralds the arrivals of debuting director Jordan Spiro and her magnetic young stars

Audience Consensus

Night Comes On is a movie that will make you feel all the feels. It’s a story about sisterhood, revenge, and love that will leave you moved and riveted. The performances by Dominique Fishback and Tatum Marilyn Hall are superbly nuanced and authentic, bringing the two girls to life in a way that is undeniably moving. While it’s not an easy, breezy summer film, it’s an important one worth watching for its timely themes and remarkable acting. Plus, who doesn’t love a good quest-plot?

A moving, riveting movie that highlights the power of sisterhood, both on and off screen.

Night Comes On focuses on the challenge of trying to make sense of a situation that makes no sense at all, and its suggestion of revenge is one method, and its suggestion of love is another.

The quest-plot puts a solid frame around what’s essentially a sensitive study of a shattered family, poorly served by the social institutions meant to keep them safe.

An unusual and interesting feature that tries to convey the inner state of a non-communicative young woman mainly through reaction shots of her face.

Though slow, it’s intense, and you’re hooked from its first scene… to its last, wrenching image. Spiro is a real filmmaker.

Like its determined heroine, “Night Comes On” burns with a smoldering fire, a heat that is no less intense, no less effective, for remaining largely beneath the surface.

The combination of the strong lead performances, an boldly honest script and the director’s subtle hand makes this family drama worth seeking out.
