Critics Consensus

Honeyland uses life in a remote village to offer an eye-opening perspective on experiences that should resonate even for audiences halfway around the world.

Audience Consensus

Honeyland is the bee’s knees! This documentary about a Macedonian beekeeper named Hatidze is both visually stunning and emotionally moving. The filmmakers show incredible patience and care in telling Hatidze’s story, just like Hatidze shows in caring for her bees. It’s a cautionary tale about the delicate balance of life and traditions in rural Macedonia, but also a celebration of the joys and hardships of daily life. And let’s not forget the incredible cinematography – I was constantly asking myself “How did they get that shot?” Honeyland is a must-see for anyone who loves nature, culture, and a good story.

Directors Ljubo Stefanov and Tamara Kotevska show the same infinite patience and care in telling the story of their subject, a Macedonian beekeeper named Hatidze, that Hatidze shows in caring for her bees.

As fly-on-the-wall documentaries go, Honeyland is a particularly fine example. There is no narration: the rather sad, but enveloping, story is told in purely visual terms, and the photography is outstanding.

Hatidze’s story is heartbreakingly moving, and needs no heavy editorialising. Her strength, dignity, resilience and humanity carry the film’s truth and weight.

Honeyland is a beautiful film – both physically (the cinematography is lush and lovely) and emotionally. Hatidze’s story is one of patience and care, diligence and love.
