Bones and All (2022)
RT Audience Score: 66%
Awards & Nominations: NA
Although its subject matter may be hard to stomach, Bones and All proves a deeply romantic and thought-provoking treat.
If you’re looking for a movie that’ll make you feel all the feels, Bones and All is the one for you. Sure, it’s not for the faint of heart – cannibalism isn’t exactly a topic you bring up at the dinner table – but trust me, it’s worth it.
The romance in this flick is so deep, you’ll need a snorkel just to keep up. And it’s not your typical love story either – it’s thought-provoking, it’s complex, it’s…well, it’s a little bit weird. But hey, who doesn’t love a good weird love story?
So if you’re feeling brave and you’re in the mood for something a little different, give Bones and All a shot. Just maybe don’t watch it while you’re eating dinner.

Filled with underdeveloped characters and a plot that goes nowhere, it reinforces the feeling I got from Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria remake: this director doesn’t understand horror but is really good at putting viewers to sleep.

Plot
The French writer and 2022 Nobel Prize awardee Annie Ernaux, whose novels and memoirs have gained her a devoted following, journeys into her family’s memory. Compiled from gorgeously textured home movie images from 1972 to 1981 – when her first books were published, her sons became teenagers, and her husband Philippe brought an 8mm film camera everywhere they went – this portrait of a time, place, and moment of personal and political significance takes us from holidays and family rituals in suburban bourgeois France to trips abroad in Albania and Egypt, Spain and the USSR. Supplying her own introspective voiceover, Ernaux and her co-filmmaker, her son David, guide the viewer through fragments of a decade.

Plot
It should be the happiest time in Valeria’s life. She and her husband, Raul, have finally seen one of their longtime dreams come true: Valeria is pregnant. At first, everything seems perfect. Gradually, though, her mood darkens. With motherhood upon her, Valeria can’t shake off heavy self-doubt and a pervasive dread, the latter stemming from visions of spider-like presences and other possibly supernatural threats. Hoping to confront these demons, she reconnects with the old, more carefree life she once gave up for Raul, including rekindling an old flame with her first love, Octavia.

Nr. 10″ is a film that leaves its audience divided, with some calling it bold and bonkers, while others find it frustrating and undercooked. The movie begins as a deadpan comedy about an adulterous affair among actors and their director, but then morphs into something entirely different. While some critics praise the film’s enigmatic and confounding nature, others find it thematically threadbare and less coherent than the director’s previous works. However, all agree that the ending is the best, funniest, and most delightful of any movie in years, with a satisfyingly cathartic and diabolically open-ended finale that leaves us both smiling and scratching our heads. Overall, “Nr. 10” is a satiric experiment that challenges its viewers and rewards those who are willing to go in cold and embrace its quirky and unpredictable nature.

Amigo, the Spanish thriller that has finally made its way to North America, is a masterclass in restrained suspense. Director Óscar Martín expertly weaves a tale of a paralysed man and his best friend and carer, whose relationship slowly dissolves into a Hitchcockian nightmare. The chemistry between the two leads, Pareja and Botet, is palpable and adds depth and intensity to their characters. Martín’s direction is deliberate and methodical, leaving breadcrumbs for the audience to follow but never revealing his hand too soon. The result is a film that is both bold and ambitious, yet disturbing and fascinating. Amigo is a must-see for fans of slow-burn thrillers and those who appreciate the art of suspense.
If you’re looking for a slow-burn thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat, Amigo is the movie for you. With a seasoned chemistry between the two leads, you’ll be invested in their relationship from the start. Sure, it’s a bit weird, but that only adds to the intrigue. And don’t worry about getting lost – the breadcrumbs are there, but you’ll never know for sure where the director is leading you. So sit back, relax, and let Amigo take you on a darkly fascinating ride.

Making discomfiting statements about American political willpower and race relations, Bad Axe offers a close-up perspective on societal turmoil during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bad Axe is like a punch in the gut, but in a good way. It’s a movie that doesn’t shy away from the uncomfortable truths about American politics and race relations. And boy, does it hit close to home during these crazy COVID times.
The film takes you on a wild ride through societal turmoil, and it’s not always pretty. But that’s what makes it so damn good. It’s like watching a train wreck, but you can’t look away.
The filmmakers really know how to make you squirm in your seat, but in a way that’s oddly satisfying. You’ll leave the theater feeling like you just went through a cathartic experience.
So, if you’re looking for a movie that will make you think and feel, Bad Axe is definitely worth checking out. Just be prepared to have your world rocked.

You sense that as an actor, Krieps’s own imperial phase is just beginning.

Corsage is not a great movie, but it’s good at detailing one woman’s circumstances. It doesn’t browbeat us with meaning, which it had every right to do, but instead attempts something humbler.

Overall, “Corsage” shows a tantalizing way forward for the hopelessly staid biopic genre: honoring, provoking and upending with verve and humor as it liberates a complex woman from iconography’s deadening glamour.

Corsage reimagines it all, granting her unexpected agency… There’s something magnificently empowering about that.

This astounding film reimagines the breakthrough moment of Elisabeth’s rebellion to reclaim herself and her agency… It’s both exhilarating and tragic.

The story departs from the facts most radically in creating a new final act for Elisabeth, one that is not necessarily happier but is true to her wilful nature and to this audacious film’s savvy sense of invention.

Telling the story of an unhappy royal, Kreuzer would have done better to tell it historically or, like [Baz] Luhrmann, she should have followed the adage “go big or go home.” She did neither.

Corsage is neither humorous nor cruel enough to take the empress’ midlife crisis to the next level. Eventually, it quietly runs out of gas and is over.

Krieps is sensational in the lead role, playing Sissi as a ball of nerves, but also a single-minded and cultivated woman who’s no longer prepared to conform to blind convention.

Krieps does a fine job making the storm raging inside Elisabeth feel as real as possible, with Kreutzer occasionally struggling to make a film as interesting as her star.

Corsage turns the isolating life of a leading female royal into an anachronistic meditation on female celebrity, patriarchal oppression and the psychological damage both inflict.

Plot
Empress Elizabeth of Austria and Queen of Hungary is idolized for her beauty and renowned for inspiring fashion trends. But in 1877, ‘Sisi’ turns 40 and is officially deemed an old woman. She fights to maintain her public image by lacing her corset tighter and tighter. Despite being instrumental in Austria’s alliance with Hungary, the Empress’s role has since been reduced against her wishes to purely performative. She becomes restless in Vienna and travels to England and Hungary, visiting former lovers and political allies, seeking the excitement of her youth. With a future of strictly ceremonial duties laid out in front of her, Elizabeth comes up with a plan to protect her legacy.
