Haing S. Ngor was a Cambodian-American actor, physician, author, and refugee. He is best known for his Academy Award-winning performance in the 1984 film The Killing Fields. Ngor was born in Samrong Young, Cambodia, and survived the Khmer Rouge regime before immigrating to the United States in 1980. He became a successful doctor in Los Angeles, but his life changed when he was cast in The Killing Fields. He was the first Asian actor to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Ngor was also a humanitarian and an advocate for the Cambodian people. He wrote two autobiographies, Haing Ngor: A Cambodian Odyssey and Survival in the Killing Fields. He was tragically murdered in Los Angeles in 1996.
