Jethica (2023)
RT Audience Score: 83%
Awards & Nominations: NA
Jethica, the latest offering from director Pete Ohs, is a horror-comedy that manages to strike a delicate balance between creepy and comic. With its clever techniques and old-fashioned allure, it feels like a modern update on a Hollywood B-movie. While it may not offer much in the way of scares or laughs, it is strangely fascinating nonetheless. Ohs and his screenwriting-cast deftly manage to transition from one tone to the other by slow degrees, resulting in a film that is both clever and accomplished. Despite its meandering plot and tonal gambits, Jethica is a delightful and small little film that is well worth a watch.
Jethica is like that weird friend you have who you’re not sure if you like or not, but you can’t stop hanging out with them anyway. It’s a horror-comedy that doesn’t quite hit the mark on either front, but somehow manages to be entertaining nonetheless. The plot is a bit all over the place, but the creative techniques and micro-budget charm make up for it. Plus, it’s only 72 minutes long, so even if you don’t love it, at least it won’t waste too much of your time. Overall, Jethica is worth a watch if you’re in the mood for something quirky and offbeat.

With its stark action and its clever techniques, the director Pete Ohs’s off-kilter ghost story has an old-fashioned, downbeat allure; it plays like a modern update on a Hollywood B-movie.

This is a strange film all around, distractible and full of Olympic-level tonal gambits. Viewers’ mileage will vary. Wildly.

Ohs dresses up a haunting parable about stalking and harassment in the comforts of a wry supernatural thriller that makes a subtle statement about the real life horrors women live with every day.
