[Huesera] accomplishes a lofty goal for genre cinema: Taking a familiar formula and turning it into a personal statement.

“Huesera” is the type of staggering supernatural nightmare that is as transfixing as it is terrifying.

The remarkable debut from writer-director Michelle Garza Cervera is as effectively blood-curdling as it is intellectually incisive.

Huesera is a tale of motherhood told in splintered bones and fractured identity, and while its conclusion may be quieter than other horror classics, it’s no less satisfying. October 7, 2022

The excellent performances and the impeccable script of Abia Castillo and Garza Cervera herself speaks of classism, appearances and above all that synergy between good and evil, of those things that exist but are not talked about. [Full Review in Spanish]

Huesera: The Bone Woman offers a unique take on a Mexican urban legend, but would have benefitted from a tighter narrative.

Cervera’s triumphant debut offering really gets under the skin. The pace and overall lack of ‘scares’ may not be to everyone’s tastes, but Huesera delivers a powerful, engaging, and sometimes bruising experience.

Huesera is light on Horror but it’s a darker and more frank storty about pregnancy than we’re usually given.

It’s mostly impressive stuff, but the abrupt, opaque ending is truly astounding, sure to be interpreted as happy or depressing depending on the individual.

Plot
It should be the happiest time in Valeria’s life. She and her husband, Raul, have finally seen one of their longtime dreams come true: Valeria is pregnant. At first, everything seems perfect. Gradually, though, her mood darkens. With motherhood upon her, Valeria can’t shake off heavy self-doubt and a pervasive dread, the latter stemming from visions of spider-like presences and other possibly supernatural threats. Hoping to confront these demons, she reconnects with the old, more carefree life she once gave up for Raul, including rekindling an old flame with her first love, Octavia.
