Critics Consensus

State and Main offers plenty of wit and laughs in its lampoons of the movie industry

Audience Consensus

State and Main” is a movie that takes a hilarious look at the chaos that goes on behind the scenes of a Hollywood production. While some critics found it lacking in the sharpness of Mamet’s other works, I found it to be a fun and lighthearted satire that pokes fun at the film industry. The characters are intriguing and the performances are memorable, making it a great movie for older teens and anyone who wants a good laugh. Overall, “State and Main” is a must-watch for anyone who loves movies and wants to see the lighter side of Hollywood.

Having left New Hampshire over excessive demands by the locals, the cast and crew of “The Old Mill” moves their movie shoot to a small town in Vermont. However, they soon discover that The Old Mill burned down in 1960, the star can’t keep his pants zipped, the starlet won’t take her top off, and the locals aren’t quite as easily conned as they appear.

Hollywood corrupts absolutely, and Mamet turns the toxic process into the year’s best and smartest comedy.

The film may be the sharpest of all Hollywood satires, a comedy which recognizes the equally chaotic and creative process of filmmaking, while also offering a scathing perspective on a film’s behind-the-scenes challenges.

A grand escalation of madness seems to be the idea here, but Mamet has difficulty getting to a point of insanity with a lukewarm sense of humor.

David Mamet, that president emeritus of hard-consonant profanity, often seems as comfortable with softer stuff as a man wearing wool in July. But this on-the-nose Hollywood satire played like Preston Sturges absolved of Production-Code limitations.
