Harrowing yet essential viewing, Procession probes the lasting legacy of trauma with heart-wrenching grace.

Audience Consensus

Procession” is a documentary that will make you feel all the feels. It’s not an easy watch, but it’s worth it. The film follows six abuse survivors as they process their pain through art. Watching them create their short films is inspiring, but it’s the moments in between that really hit home. You see the sense of community that binds them together and the hope that they have for a better future. It’s a powerful reminder that healing is possible, even in the darkest of times. Plus, the film has David Lynch’s seal of approval, so you know it’s good.

PROCESSION
 All Critics (46) | Top Critics (18) | Fresh (45) | Rotten (1)
Robert Greene’s signature mode of performance-based documentary finds potent purpose in this shattering study of six abuse survivors processing their pain through art.

Procession is a film that makes you think. It certainly doesn’t make you comfortable.

These guys are the ones who step willingly into the worst moments of their lives, jumping into an abyss with the faith that there may be something healing on the other side. Name something that’s more heroic than that.

None of this is very easy. But if evil only dissipates when light hits it, then the first step is letting light in.

Observational documentaries are by nature intrusive, but “Procession,” miraculously, never feels that way – you sense humane engagement, not imposition.

Look closer, and you’ll begin to see that this film is really about something just as profound but somehow very different: the power of art to heal.

By the mid-section, the narrative starts to follow a pattern of prep scenes, filming, emotional catharsis, and then repeat. Yet Procession never becomes monotonous because each mans journey has its own twists and turns.

“Watching the short films they create may give ‘Procession’ its momentum, but its richness is derived in the moments between takes, in the sense of community that comes to bind them as they will themselves and each other forward.”

 Always Good Movies
Procession gives outsiders an intimate view of the damage done by abuse. It gives survivors a chance to see that there is hope: that the pain and the panic and other debilitating symptoms can recede, and there can be a life afterwards.
