RT Audience Score: 79%
Awards & Nominations: 6 wins & 12 nominations
Farewell, My Queen transcends its gaudy period trappings to offer an affecting historical drama built on timeless – and timely – themes
Farewell, My Queen” is like a fancy cake that you can’t stop eating, even though you know you’ll regret it later. The movie is full of political intrigue, beautiful costumes, and captivating performances. Diane Kruger is especially delicious as Marie Antoinette, playing her with just the right amount of flightiness and self-indulgence. The film may not be historically accurate, but who cares when it’s this much fun? Let them eat cake, indeed!

It might be that Marie still waits for a true incarnation, but Jacquot’s pushing her beyond likeability is refreshing.

His portrait loses some of its eerie power through the ugly twist at the film’s conclusion, but she remains a fascinating enigma, and touchingly human.

The details of the plot are unimportant: that is the main point made by the skillful director, Benot Jacquot. It is the slowness with which they realize what is happening that fascinates.

It’s expertly crafted, riveting, thrilling and heartbreaking. And it understands why we become so invested in things like our current presidential election. It understands that the political is personal.
