Rouben Mamoulian was an Armenian-American film and theatre director. He was a pioneer of sound films and was known for his innovative visual style. He directed the first three-strip Technicolor film, Becky Sharp (1935), and the musicals Applause (1929) and Love Me Tonight (1932). He also directed the classic horror film Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931). Mamoulian was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for his work on the film Queen Christina (1933).
